In this 2 hour workshop, we will introduce the chemistry of pigments and binders used in painting processes within a historical context, including discussions of materials used in art from prehistory to the contemporary era. We will provide a tactile and shared experience for learning about science and art practice for a wide audience.

Interactive lectures, demonstrations, discussion, and practice will expose participants to content covering the history and science of color, the techniques of chemistry, perception and optics, art history, the evolution of aesthetics over time, and the technical and conceptual considerations of color in art practice. All students will prepare and use their own pigments. All materials necessary for participation will be provided.
