Pain Management: The Past, Present, and Future

The practice of pain management has evolved over time from managing pain with drugs to a more modern focus on alternative methods. This lecture will discuss traditional treatments for managing pain medically including NSAID therapy, antidepressant therapy, use of opioids, and others. We will then look at more comprehensive therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acupuncture, alternative medicine, and interventional procedures. We will conclude with an introduction to the future of the practice of pain management through regenerative and integrative medicine modalities as a proposed answer to the opioid epidemic.
