Exploring the Songwriting Process

Through live performance, lecture, and slides, singer/songwriter duo Whitaker & Oliver will explore where songs come from and how they are created. As a narrative art form, songs use sound and have a beginning and an end. Like poetry and dance, songs are ephemeral, experienced at the pace at which the artist delivers them. They also have a life of their own as part of our personal and cultural experiences. This lecture will review several topics including song traditions, inspiration, music forms, poetry, arranging, and performance to provide an "ears-on" understanding of the process of songwriting to help us fully appreciate the songs around us.
